Ray Charles: The musician who had Glaucoma

Today, June 10, 2019, we remember the life of the late Ray Charles, a legendary musician who pioneered the soul music genre in the 1950s. The renowned singer, celebrated not only for his music but also for overcoming blindness, lost his sight at an early age due to what appeared to be undiagnosed glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve, usually as a result of increased intraocular pressure. Generally, it presents no symptoms, leaving the patient unaware of its presence, which is why it is often referred to as the “silent thief of sight.”

Glaucoma tends to have minimal symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage, early detection is the best strategy. If glaucoma is diagnosed in its early stages, we can prevent its progression and significant optic nerve damage through proper treatment.

What can we do to prevent glaucoma?

We recommend three key actions:

  1. If you have a family history of glaucoma or a condition that predisposes you to it, undergo more frequent screenings
  2. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Engage in regular, moderate exercise, maintain a healthy diet, avoid smoking, and limit your intake of caffeine or other stimulants
  3. Visit your Eye Doctor regularly
