Contactology

At Visionker Eye Clinic can adapt and monitor of a wide variety of contact lenses, in order to correct any refractive defect.
We adapt conventional contact lenses, whether they are soft or rigid. Soft or hydrophilic lenses are the most widely used today, these lenses can correct refractive problems such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia in a fast and satisfactory way.
Also, we are specialists in the adaptation of special contact lenses for the treatment of keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, corneal ectasia or correction of residual defects after refractive surgery. Different types of contact lenses such as scleral contact lenses and rigid permeable lenses (RGP) are uses in these cases.

What are scleral contact lenses?

Scleral lenses are a type of contact lenses with a larger diameter than conventional contact lenses, which support the white part of the eye (sclera) avoiding possible corneal irregularities. The objective of these lenses is to form an area between the cornea and the lens, providing a regular surface on it, which helps to improve vision, dry eye symptoms and delay a possible corneal transplant.

Who can wear scleral lenses?

Scleral lenses are made of a semi-rigid material used mainly in patients with corneal irregularities. The use of these lenses is aimed at patients with keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, or ectasia after refractive surgery that may or may not have undergone keratoplasty with the use of intracorneal rings. Also, they are a great option for patients who cannot use conventional contact lenses due to a defect in the epithelium or scars in the cornea. Finally, the use of these contact lenses is also recommended for patients with dry eyes who complain of itching or stinging since it is proven that they improve these symptoms.

What benefits and advantages do we get from using scleral lenses?

  • Vision improvement, in a patient with an irregular cornea. This lens creates a new, more regular surface that improves the visual quality of the patient. There are also multifocal scleral contact lenses, which correct eyestrain or presbyopia.
  • Comfort, due to the diameter they have and the support they provide to the sclera, these contact lenses offer greater comfort. They are custom fitted to each patient’s eye. They are custom fitted to each patient’s eye.
  • Resistance and duration, it is recommended to change the scleral lens every year and a half to two years, so the in the long run their price is very competitive regarding use and resistance.
  • Optimal in dry eyes, since there is always a tear between the cornea and the contact lens, the symptoms of irritation or stinging are considerably reduced.
